Loaded Veggie Dog

I am not a fan of fake meat, in part because it’s really processed. However, when I’m having an emotional upset that can only be resolved by stuffing my face with a hot dog, I can justify almost anything, except meat of course.

The best veggie dogs I have found (and the only ones that don’t resemble pink styrofoam) are the Yves Bavarian Veggie Sausage. They also don’t make my tummy ache, which is nice.  This loaded dog is a somewhat healthy version of your standard pimped-out hot dog. It has some nutrition, but mostly it’s good old fashioned comfort in an organic bun.

Ingredients:

Vegenaise

OrganicVille Stone Ground Mustard (love this stuff! it’s got bite) or mustard of choice

1 Yves Bavarian Veggie Dog

1 whole wheat hoagie bun

1/2 small avocado

1/2 cup sauteed yellow onion (mushrooms would also be delightful)

Sprouts

Whatever else you feel like throwin’ on there.

Method:

Cook the dog (I used a toaster oven, 425 for about ten mins). Pan fry the onions in olive oil and salt and warm the bun while the onions are cooking. Spread the avocado, vegenaise and mustard on the bun, add the dog, and pack the onions and sprouts on top. Squeeze another layer of mustard if it suits your fancy and dig in! The challenge now is getting it in your mouth, so open wide!

Yves Bavarian Veggie Dog’s are really your favourites? I haven’t tried that product specifically, but all the other Yves products I’ve tried have really disappointed me. I prefer Tofurkey sausages…though I guess those are “sausages” and not “hot dogs.” :)

I’m surprised too – with the exception of the Ground Round, I’ve been disappointed by all the Yves products I’ve tried (about 6).
Tofurkey Sundried Tomato Sausages are my favourite: I’ve found that they fool carnivores in chili, and I have a pack-a-week habit with them! I really do find them to be in a different class.
