Top Ten Ways to Make Salads Rock!
Eating fresh vegetables is one of the best things you can do for your health, and a big salad every day is recommended by western doctors and eastern practitioners alike.
A big salad provides ample nutrients, enzymes and beautifying ingredients…but sometimes, salads can be BORING. So, in order to make salads a celebration instead of an obligation, we’ve compiled a top-ten list of things you can do to make your salads as thrilling as possible.
Top Ten Ways to Make Salads Rock!
10 – Use Organic Ingredients! Organic food tastes better, and also has a higher nutrient profile without nasty chemicals of conventional produce.
9 – Keep it Simple! Stick to a few ingredients and don’t go overboard. This will make the individual veggies more enjoyable and easier to digest.
8 – Buy Local! Local produce tastes better and is more nutritious because it’s eaten closer to it’s harvest time.
7 – Keep it Fresh! The longer produce sits on your counter or in your fridge, the less tasty it will be. Try to shop for produce every two to three days.
6 – Mix it Up! Salad is not just iceberg lettuce with pale tomatoes and grated carrots. Get creative by using ingredients you’ve never used, and don’t feel like you’re limited to just veggies.
5 – Make it With Love! Preparing good food can be meditative and healing. Be present in the kitchen, and make your food with care and attention.
4 – Be Prepared! If you have salad ingredients on hand, you will be much more likely to reach for those when you’re doing the fridge prowl.
3 – Add Fresh Herbs! Pick up a basil plant and pluck fresh leaves for your lunch. Mint is amazing with cucumber and lime, and dill is delicious with quinoa and olives.
2 – Jazz it up! Nuts, seeds, edible flowers, tofu, quinoa, brown rice, legumes, spices… the list of tasty additions is never ending.
1 – Get Saucy! This tip will make your salads a celebration instead of an obligation. Use different oils (we looove hemp oil), spices, herbs, spicy mustards, tahini (our FAVE because it makes everything creamy), tamari, a whole lemon, juiced, balsamic or apple cider vinegars, minced garlic and even mashed avocado.
Enjoy these tips and stay tuned for this salad feature as we work our way through our top ten and provide you with as many tools as possible to make amazing salads.
