Vegan in Granville Island Market

One of my favourite things to do in Vancouver has always been to wander through Granville Island Market on a cold fall afternoon, have a coffee on the pier, buy an item or two from Duso’s, and take in the lively throngs of people. After becoming vegan, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to have the same experience. I can’t eat cheese, I can’t eat cured meats. Really, all the foods that held sentimental value to me were now off limits.
I was pleasantly surprised however, at the vegan finds I stumbled upon.
There were the amazing Vegan rolls at Laurelle’s Fine Foods:
I tried the Soya Sage Tofu roll for lunch, and brought the Mexican Flax roll home with me. Both were delicious and far more flavourful than the sad, grey-brown sausage rolls that I would have gotten as a non-vegan.

Next stop was the Grainery, which sells bulk dried goods:

I picked up some TVP (texturized vegetable protein) which I am currently using in the vegan test kitchen at home. I also scored some vegan bacon bits:

They tasted more like paprika than actual bacon, but then again ‘real’ bacon bits don’t taste much like bacon either. On top of a baked potato with Tofutti’s Sour Supreme, they were good enough for this vegan.
After that, I grabbed a coffee (with soymilk) and meandered around the pier and the shops. I had a wonderfully vegan, wonderfully Vancouver afternoon, and didn’t feel deprived at all.
